python+zope++:: Quicky: Debugging ajax apps

Technorati tag(s):

Ajax is trendy and may be a bit difficult to debug.

Let me relate. I have a site that makes use of ajax quite a bit. So instead of refreshing the whole page, we just get the bits and stuff it up a DOM element.

All's well, or so it seems. After a while, I noticed that some characters are not rendered properly. And I thought, I've seen that before.

It's because we have not set the charset. How to see this?

If you're using firefox, get TamperData extension and you'll see it clearly.

Now in Zope, I added:

  <dtml-call "REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type','text/html,charset=iso-8859-1')">

So, get yourself TamperData extension, and some other Javascript extension such as FireBug.

Lessons learned.
