I've read good things about lighttpd, and thought that it was time for me to try it out.

Installed lighttpd on one of my loaded sites, where apache usually required more than 100 children to serve the requests.

Get the source at lighttpd.net and compile and install. fyi, we need to have pcre and pcre-devel, otherwise all regex related conf will not work.

Once installed, modify the config file like so:

 server.modules              = (
                               "mod_rewrite",
 #                               "mod_deflate",
                               "mod_redirect",
                                "mod_access",
                               "mod_proxy",
                               "mod_compress",
                               "mod_expire",
                                "mod_accesslog" )

 url.rewrite-once = ( "^/(.*)$"  => "/VirtualHostBase/http/domain.com.my:80/folder/VirtualHostRo
 ot/$1" )
 proxy.server = ( "/VirtualHostBase/" => ( ( "host"  => "127.0.0.1" ,
 "port" => 8080 ) ) )

After a week, backend servers are responding well to requests, even durin peak hour. I have not looked at using deflate yet since the patch doesn't patch successfully (lighttpd 1.4.18).

Maybe, I'll look at using lighttpd 1.5

Maybe you should also try nginx. While lighttpd is 'light', it's also has a serious memory leak (at least me did). Nginx configuration file also much verbose compared to lighttpd and apache.
